When you’re injured, navigating the world of rehabilitation can be tricky. The list of choices for information and help from those wanting your attention is not short. There are social media influencers, Google, physical therapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists, personal trainers, and pandemic-created unlicensed self-proclaimed “experts” (to name just a few). Complicating it more, there is a wide spectrum of physical therapy services, from type and quality of service provided to differences in experience, education, philosophies, time spent per patient, limitations due to insurance companies, and having to meet billing requirements.
Does finding a good rehab professional sound overwhelming? Don’t worry. It’s not.
If you understand your situation and trust your instincts, selecting the right provider can be easy. Here are three very important items your rehab professional should understand about you to begin the process:
1. How the injury happened. This includes obtaining the circumstances that led to the injury and the timeline and specific details of what happened.
2. What you are having difficulty doing. Functional and sport/athletic limitations should be discussed. This will give the provider a better understanding of what to look for and treat.
3. Your goals for rehab. This should not be underemphasized. Sometimes goals may seem obvious. If you’re unsure that your provider understands, then tell them. Make it obvious. Your goals, and what you want out of rehab, are the most important pieces in the entire process. Being on the same page allows you and your provider(s) to have a better working relationship as you strive to achieve your goals.
What should you do if your rehab professional doesn’t place importance on these 3 items? Again, trust your instincts and move on.
